Hair loss is often very distressing for men and women and there is a general belief that there is little that can be done to help. Developments in the treatment of hair loss have provided hope utilizing Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for age-related hair loss known as Androgenic Alopecia, commonly seen as male-pattern balding and female pattern thinning. It is also useful for some medical conditions, know has alopecia areata.
PRP has more than 30 growth factors, including those that provide nutrition to the scalp cells, promote the supply of new blood to the hair follicles, and minimize scalp inflammation to create productive and healthy hair follicles. PRP treatments utilize the growth factors from your own body for healing the injured body areas, which in this case are the bald spots and hair thinning areas. PRP is extracted from your own blood and injected into your dormant scalp tissue to regenerate the hair follicles, resulting in a healthy scalp with a renewed ability to produce thicker new hair.:
At Believe Aesthetics, our providers are certified specialist in PRP hair restoration using Dr. Rapaport’s protocol by the National Institute of Medical Aesthetics. PRP hair restoration is a safe choice for many patients with hair loss. However, there are some exceptions such as a history of shingles on the scalp, diabetes, coagulation disease or on blood thinning and/or immunosuppressive medications. Also, PRP hair restoration will not work on clients who are entirely bald or have entirely lost the hair follicles in the treatment area. Best results have been achieved treating the following conditions:
Spot Baldness: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that is highly inflammatory. The stem cells of the hair follicle become dormant in it. Studies demonstrate that PRP treatment for hair loss activated the dormant stem cells 60% of the time. Significant hair growth is observed in bald spots due to the use of PRP in more than 60% cases in both the genders. More than 70% of cases show a decrease in hair loss, burning and itching (if present).
Male Pattern Baldness: Typically, men get crown balding and a receding hairline at the temples. The PRP treatment helps to maximize hair growth in the case of pattern baldness in males.
Female Pattern Baldness: Usually in cases with females, there is diffusely thin hair on the top of the patients’ scalps. In the cases of pattern baldness in females, PRP has shown to reduce hair thinning and increase hair growth.
There is minimal discomfort during the procedure which takes 30-45 minutes depending upon the size of the treatment area. The patient’s blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge for about 15 minutes to separate the blood components and concentrate the platelets. Since PRP hair restoration uses the patient’s own blood, there are very rarely adverse effects from the treatments, but anyone who is undergoing treatment for cancer, blood disease, and other conditions may not be a candidate for the PRP treatment. 1-2 weeks before the procedure, patients should avoid smoking and alcohol, as well as anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin or Ibuprofen. Post treatment, there will likely be tenderness to the treated areas of the scalp which usually subsides within 1-3 days.
The protocol is a series of four treatments, scheduled initially 1 month apart. There is no downtime and the patient may still be advised to continue or start oral and topical care as well. Maintenance treatments are subsequently set every 3 or 6 months. It is recommended that patients have been assessed by their primary care provider to ensure their loss is not secondary to a medical condition or medications.
